Bench Session: Matt’s Gnat

Tied up 25 Matt’s Gnats tonight — a classic, minimalist pattern that’s been fooling selective trout for decades. Simple, versatile, and deadly in clear water.

Recipe:
• FM5050 size 16 hook
• UTC 70 denier black thread
• Grey Antron wing
• Olive green Super Hair ribbing
�• Black hackle
• Loon UV Finish (Flow)

Sometimes the simplest flies are the ones you end up trusting the most.

😈This purple little devil is going to get tested on the Ogden River this month. It’s a modification of a pattern that’s been working well for me this winter.

I changed out the tail for some orange glow bright, wrapped the body in tinsel, added the ribbing for durability and finished it with a coat of hard as nails.

Follow to see the results. Too much changed or just enough to be more effective on the Ogden River.

🪳It’s midge season and this has been a productive pattern on the Ogden River. The gold bead, swollen thorax and reflective wing bud imitates an emerging midge and induces strikes during the warmest part of the day. The inverting bead is heavy enough to pull this fly to the bottom where hungry fish are waiting. This one is tied on a size 20 Czech hook and the completed fly weighs 2.8gn, which it a great weight for a fly this size. This is an easy tie so tie them up in various thread colors. 20 and 18 is the most popular size for midges.

🎣 The south Fork of the Ogden is still fishing well. I knew there were large fish in there but I was surprised to see this one at 20”.

📊Over 2 weeks I fished three sections of the Ogden River. Each section was fished 3 times on different days with three different flies. Each fly was the same pattern, size and weight, but a different color. Each section was fished for 90 minutes. I netted 27 fish.

The South Fork of the Ogden continues to be productive. Small flies in deep pools and around structure are the key to putting fish in the net. I took this fish on a purple perdigon pattern in about 2’ of water. Get out there, rain and snow forecasted over the next several days.

🎣 Ogden River Fishing Report – South Fork (Late November/Early December)

What started as a fly test turned into a clear picture of how well the South Fork of the Ogden River is fishing right now. Over 13.5 hours on the water, I fished Magpie, Botts, and Meadows Campgrounds, logging every fish, condition, and detail along the way.

✔️ Botts Campground produced nearly half of all fish
✔️ Browns made up the majority of the catch
✔️ Overcast days were far and away the most productive
✔️ Low, clear water rewarded slow movement and precise euro-nymphing

The takeaway? The Ogden River fly fishing has been consistent, predictable, and encouraging — a strong sign of a healthy river when approached with the right technique.
